Selecting a Candidate for a Job/Work

Selecting a Candidate for a Job/Work

How do we rate an individual? This is a question which perplexes the companys bosses, the managers and the candidates too who are on the look out for a job for themselves. But some of these bosses and managers do have some guidelines by which they select the candidates for the job. They are as follows:-

Fresher: - A fresher is one who has just completed College or had just passed out from it and is on his/her lookout for a job. As we see, of today, not many companies recruit freshers and some of the companies even go further by placing advertisements by specifically specifying , “ Please excuse No Freshers!!” or “Freshers may Not Apply!!” What has a pass out candidate done in order to get an unjust treatment as this? This attitude needs to be changed and unless a candidate is given a chance to prove his worth, how could anyone rate upon his/her performance. A fresher even could be recruited as a trainee. But not many company bosses & managers give much importance to this as they would have to spend more money on each trainee but they may have no idea on how these trainees could be beneficial later on unless given an opportunity to prove themselves.

University: - This is another guideline which most of the company bosses and managers follow in recruiting a candidate for work. Some of them also specifically specify the universities in their ads (advertisements) like, “Bangalore University pass out candidates may not apply.” It’s difficult to understand why these bosses & managers do have a biased attitude towards some universities. How could a University judge on a candidate? But what role could the University play with a candidate’s future? It could judge a candidate on his academic performance or through major involvement in sports. The attitude of these people needs to be changed as this should not be a criterion to select a candidate for a job. Is it not the duty of the bosses & the managers to check upon the ability of the candidates rather than by the Universities?

Age: - This is yet another criteria by which the bosses and the managers of the companys go by. Some of them even go by specifically specifying the age limits for the candidates they are looking for (for e.g. 18-25 years or 20-31 yrs.). Though this maybe a requirement for high class jobs such as for the army, air force, navy, and pilots or for other government jobs but is it a requirement for the private companies too!! Can not a person over thirty work too, if he has got enough potential to do so. This too needs to be changed as what has the age to do with a candidate’s performance.

Physique: - It’s really interesting that a number of bosses including the company managers go by this criterion. Though this may be needed in high class jobs but should this be a criterion in private companies too!! Can not a well-built student match up to a strong candidate not in physique but in his ability to do the job. Should the company bosses & mangers go by this criterion? Should they not have a modern outlook or a new outlook in today’s competitive world?

Sex: - This is yet another criterion for the company bosses and managers to follow while selecting a candidate for a job. Most of these bosses prefer females rather than males to work for they companies. Can’t males be receptionists, stenographers, secretaries’, typists, nurses, a homemaker (who looks into the needs of the company like stationeries, etc.? Why are these posts only offered to women!!! On one hand we so have we sales persons as both males & females, many males & females also join the armed forces, the air-force and most of them become pilots too but on the other hand we do have some particular jobs which is offered only to females and not to males.

Appearance: - Should this be a criterion for the company bosses and mangers to choose a candidate for working in a company. This does not mean that a student should not be dressed properly but what is the relation between a beard, a mustache & the job for a candidate who is on the look out for a job? Is it his/ her appearance that counts or is it his/ her ability to get the job done that counts on!!

Achievements: - Many of the established company bosses & managers go by this criterion. This is one of the essential criterion whether it is in academics, sports or in any other extra-curricular activities.

Therefore it is high time for the company bosses and its managers to redefine performance appraisal and to have a new outlook towards a prospering world.
